How to Choose Your First Crystal

There’s no wrong way to start. But a little context goes a long way when you’re ready to bring something new into your space.

The question we get more than any other: “Where do I even start?”

It’s a fair one. There are hundreds of crystals out there, and the internet will tell you that each one is the most important one you could own. That’s not especially useful when you’re standing in front of a display for the first time, or scrolling through a shop at midnight, trying to figure out what actually belongs in your life.

Here’s what we actually believe: choosing a crystal doesn’t need to be a complicated process. It’s a combination of being honest about what you want and noticing what you’re drawn to — and those two things will usually point you in the same direction.

“The best first crystal is the one that meets you where you are right now — not where you want to be, not where you think you should be.”

Start With What You’re Looking For

Before you look at a single stone, get clear on your intention. Not in a rigid, prescriptive way — just a loose sense of what you’re working on or what’s feeling heavy right now. Are you trying to slow down? Set limits with the people around you? Focus on something creative? Get out of your own head?

Most beginners benefit from starting with one crystal tied to a single, honest intention rather than collecting a variety all at once. One stone, held with consistency, tends to do more than a shelf full of beautiful things that don’t have a purpose.

Form Factor Matters More Than People Think

The shape you choose affects how you actually use the crystal day-to-day. A few things to consider:

  • Palm stones are the most versatile starting point. They’re shaped to fit your hand, easy to hold during quiet time, and can sit on a surface without toppling. They’re what we recommend most for beginners.
  • Towers and points are better if you’re building an intentional display or want to direct energy in a specific area of a room.
  • Tumbled stones are small, portable, and inexpensive — good for carrying in a pocket or trying a new stone without much commitment.
  • Raw pieces have more texture and character; some people find them more visually interesting, but they can be harder to hold.

If you’re unsure, go with a palm stone. You can always expand from there.

The “Does It Feel Right?” Factor

There’s a reason people say to trust what you’re drawn to, and it’s not because crystals cast spells on you the moment you make eye contact. It’s simpler than that: when something catches your attention and holds it, that’s worth paying attention to. Your instincts are data.

Look at what you keep coming back to. Notice if there’s a color or texture that keeps pulling your eye. That’s usually a decent starting point — and in our experience, people rarely regret the one they felt something for, even when they can’t explain it.

Fan Favorite Peach Selenite Palm Stone
Calm & Clarity

Peach Selenite Palm Stone

Selenite is known for its soft, cleansing quality — the peach variety carries a warmer energy than white. If you’re overwhelmed, anxious, or just tired, this is a good one to hold. It also doesn’t need to be cleansed itself, which makes it low-maintenance for a beginner.

How to Actually Use It

This is where a lot of beginners stall out. The crystal arrives, it’s beautiful, and then it just sits on a shelf. That’s fine — but if you bought it with an intention, it helps to be slightly more deliberate about it.

You don’t need a ritual. You need consistency:

  • Hold it in the morning for two or three minutes while you’re still waking up. No agenda — just holding it.
  • Keep it in your sightline during the workday if you’re using it for focus or calm.
  • Place it somewhere intentional at night — your bedside, your desk, somewhere it won’t become clutter.
  • Cleanse it monthly or whenever it feels like it needs a reset. Moonlight, sound, or breath are all practical options.

The crystal doesn’t do the work for you. But it can act as a consistent, physical reminder of what you’re trying to do — and that’s not nothing.

Caring for Your Crystal

Simple practices, done with consistency, are enough.

01

Set an Intention

Hold your crystal and take a breath. Know what you’re asking it to support.

02

Place It Intentionally

Keep it where you’ll see it — your desk, nightstand, or somewhere in your daily sightline.

03

Cleanse Monthly

Leave it in moonlight overnight, use sound (a singing bowl works), or hold it under running water.

04

Handle It Often

Crystals work best when they’re part of your daily experience — not stored away and forgotten.
